COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

Welcome to the 2024-2025 academic year! Following the California TK-12 school entry immunization  requirements will keep students healthy, in school, and ready to learn. For admission purposes, transitional kindergarten (TK) is subject to the same requirements as kindergarten (K). Ensure incoming 7th graders also receive their 1 additional Tdap dose.

Reminder note for schools: The Cancer Prevention Act (Assembly Bill No. 659) requires a notification to families of 6th graders about human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine recommendations; schools can use this template letter to parents (PDF). Additional information about California K-12 requirements can be found on California Department of Public Health’s Shots for School website.

To close out National Immunization Awareness Month in August, the ICLAC Steering Committee shared Fall 2024 vaccination tips to stay healthy this Fall.

FDA Approves Updated mRNA COVID-19 Vaccines for 2024-2025 Season

The FDA has approved and authorized updated mRNA COVID-19 vaccines for the 2024-2025 season, which include protection against the KP.2 strain of SARS-CoV-2. This strain is closely related to the current main variant, KP.3.1.1, making the updated vaccine more effective against current strains.

Key points:

  • A 2-month minimum interval is recommended between doses of the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 vaccines for individuals aged 5 and older.
  • The ACIP recommends immediate use of the updated vaccines once available.
  • Dose recommendations remain like previous guidance, with adjustments for different age groups and immunocompromised individuals.
  • All 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccines are no longer authorized for use and should not be administered. The 2023 – 2024 Novavax COVID-19 vaccine remains authorized but is no longer available in the United States, as all doses have expired.

What to Know About the Updated COVID Vaccine for Fall, Winter 2024–25

In this Q&A, Andy Pekosz, PhD, a professor in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, discusses who the updated vaccine is recommended for, when to get yours, whether it’s safe to get it alongside other seasonal vaccines. Read the article here!
