Public Health Encourages Measles Vaccine as Cases Increase in LA County and Summer Travel Begins
Public Health has confirmed a measles case in a visitor who traveled to Los Angeles County recently from abroad. This is the fourth confirmed case of measles in a Los Angeles County resident or visitor this year.Â
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is alerting residents of an increase in measles cases among people who have recently traveled internationally and domestically. With measles outbreaks happening both in the United States and internationally, an increase in cases in our county highlights how important it is for residents to get protected before residents begin making summer travel plans. Public Health encourages all residents to get protected by receiving the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine if they are not immune. Â

Public Health Declares Hepatitis A Outbreak in Los Angeles County
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has declared a community-wide outbreak of hepatitis A following a sustained increase in clinical cases and elevated virus levels detected in local wastewater. Public Health confirmed 165 hepatitis A cases in LA County since 2024, which is three times the number of cases reported in 2023. Although unhoused individuals are at higher risk for contracting hepatitis A infection because they often have limited access to handwashing and toileting facilities, of the 29 hepatitis A cases confirmed to date in 2025, most have been among people without travel or housing risk factors. This increase in hepatitis A infections among people without risk factors has corresponded with recent increases in hepatitis A wastewater concentrations. While the risk to the general public remains low, community-wide protection actions are needed to ensure that transmission of hepatitis A is reduced.

ICLAC Chair, Dr. Keri Hurley-Kim, received the 2025 Natalie J. Smith, MD., MPH, Immunization Champion Award at the California Immunization Coalition Annual Summit!
Presented by the Board of California Immunization Coalition, the Natalie Smith Immunization Champion award is presented to an individual, group, or organization that has made an outstanding contribution to immunizations at the state or local level.
As a leader in the Immunization Coalition of Los Angeles County since 2019, Dr. Hurley has played a pivotal role in coordinating multidisciplinary efforts to address vaccine hesitancy, improve healthcare provider education, and increase community engagement in immunization programs. Her leadership has directly contributed to expanding access to vaccines and improving public health outcomes.
Additionally, as a clinical pharmacist and associate clinical professor at UC Irvine, Dr. Hurley has been instrumental in training the next generation of healthcare professionals on the importance of immunizations and has made significant contributions to research in the field of immunization.

In this webinar, Dr. Skoy will identify common questions and concerns adults have about routine and seasonal vaccines, describe effective communication strategies for discussing adult vaccines with patients, and explain the role of the healthcare provider in initiating and navigating vaccine-related conversations with adult patients confidently.
About our presenter: Elizabeth Skoy, PharmD, RPhA, FAPhA, is a Professor at NDSU and the Director of the Center for Collaboration and Advancement in Pharmacy (CAP Center). As part of her faculty position, she has a community pharmacy practice site where she continues to engage in routine pharmacy patient care. Dr. Skoy has represented the pharmacy profession through various agencies including the FDA, CDC, and the American Pharmacist Association. Most recently, Dr. Skoy was named to serve on the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) Workgroup for adult RSV vaccines.
