August is National Immunization Awareness Month!
National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM) is observed every August to highlight the importance of vaccination for people of all ages. It’s a time to emphasize how vaccines protect individuals and communities from preventable diseases. NIAM also encourages people to ensure their vaccinations are up-to-date and to educate themselves about the benefits of immunization.

Measles Updates and Resources
On July 7th, U.S. measles cases surpassed the highest level since the disease was declared eliminated in 2000.

As of July 29, 2025, a total of 1,333 confirmed* measles cases were reported by 40 jurisdictions: Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York City, New York State, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Wyoming.
There have been 29 outbreaks** reported in 2025, and 87% of confirmed cases (1,156 of 1,333) are outbreak-associated. For comparison, 16 outbreaks were reported during 2024 and 69% of cases (198 of 285) were outbreak-associated.
MMR Vaccination Guidance Reminders
Before international travel
- All ages: up to date measles vaccination
- Ages 6 – 11 months: 1 dose before departure, then routine 2-dose series
- Age 12 months and older: First dose now, 2nd dose 28 days later

Updated Recommendations
HHS Secretary accepts June ACIP recommendation not to use preservative-containing seasonal influenza vaccines
On July 23, the HHS secretary accepted the ACIP recommendation for the use of 2025–26 seasonal influenza vaccines that do not contain thimerosal as a preservative. The HHS decision follows the June 26 ACIP vote.
CDC’s “Thimerosal and Vaccines” web page currently states: “There is no evidence of harm caused by the low doses of thimerosal in vaccines, except for minor reactions like redness and swelling at the injection site.” Only about 4–5% of seasonal influenza vaccine doses administered in the most recent influenza season came from preservative-containing multidose vials.
Two other ACIP recommendations voted on in June are still under review by HHS and await acceptance to become official policy:
- Annual influenza vaccination for all people age 6 months and older
- Clesrovimab (Enflonsia, Merck) as an option for RSV prevention in infants

Adult RSV Immunization
As of 6/25/25, CDC lowered the age RSV immunization is recommended to 50 years:
- Recommendation for a single dose of RSV vaccine:
- All adults aged >75 years
- Adults aged 50-74 years old at increased risk of severe RSV disease (past recommendation was for 60 – 74-year-olds at increased risk)
Pentavalent Meningococcal Vaccine (Penmenvy)
- Penmenvy (GSK) – new pentavalent meningococcal vaccine (MenABCWY) approved by FDA and recommended by CDC
- Recommended when both MenACWY and MenB are indicated at the same visit:
- Healthy persons 16–23 years (routine schedule) when shared clinical decision-making favors administration of MenB vaccine
- Persons ≥10 years who are at increased risk for meningococcal disease**
- MenB brands are not interchangeable
- GSK: Penmenvy (MenABCWY) contains Bexsero (MenB)
- Pfizer: Penbraya (MenABCWY) contains Trumenba (MenB)

Moderna COVID-19 vaccine approval for kids 6 months-11 years
On June 25, FDA changed the license for one of Moderna’s two 2025–2026 formulation COVID-19 vaccines (Spikevax). Spikevax is now licensed for use in people with one or more high risk conditions for serious COVID-19 disease at age 6 months through 64 years. It remains licensed for use in all people age 65 years and older. Previously, children younger than age 12 years received Spikevax under the terms of emergency use authorization (EUA).
In fall 2025, Moderna also will offer a new formulation of mRNA COVID-19 vaccine with the tradename mNexspike. The mNexspike product is licensed for use in children and adults age 12 years through 64 years who are at increased risk of severe COVID-19 disease and for use in all adults age 65 years or older. This product is not licensed or authorized for use in children younger than age 12 years. See the mNexspike labeling for additional information.

FDA approves Novavax COVID-19 Vaccine Nuvaxovid in adults 65 years and older and high risk individuals 12-64 years
NUVAXOVID is a vaccine indicated for active immunization to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in adults 65 years and older.
NUVAXOVID is indicated for individuals 12 through 64 years who have at least one underlying condition that puts them at high risk for severe outcomes from COVID-19.
